Remember ‘The Kings of Summer’? The coming-of-age comedy film in 2013 in which Seattle-born actor Nick Robinson played the lead role? For those of you who don’t, think River Phoenix in ‘Stand By Me’, reincarnated. For our ‘Imagined Songs’ issue, photographer Dani Brubaker captures the rebellion and mischief of Nick in an all-black-and-white, stunning editorial (it features a dog, you need to see it). Styled by Sean Knight in effortless casuals, Nick gives off an old-school cool that matches his open creativity.
We love it when we find a boy who shares our passion and understands the importance of the female perspective, and when Editor-in-Chief Cecilie Harris spoke to Nick Robinson, their interests aligned. In his interview, Nick comes across as mature and aware, but certainly not boring. A mature risk-taker, the countryside appeals to him equally as a place of still escapism and a place to throttle a motorbike through. He talks about his new indie film ‘Krystal’ directed by William H. Macy (a comic love story about a boy who searches for individuality and purpose) and offers insightful thoughts on the dangers of living in LA and how to stay grounded within it, mindful of the sinking sand that is social media, but not adverse to dipping in a toe or two.
A recurring melody in this issue is the Millennial’s reaction to an over-complicated lifestyle as we showcase the boy of today who appreciates calm tranquillity – “simplicity is good, right?”. From Ingmar to Cole, this generation seems to be aware of its reputation of having eyes fixated on a screen and thumbs glued to a device, and seem to be keen to prove it wrong – Nick is no different. “I think this coming generation has so much potential. It is just going to be a matter of whether we can come together to actually make meaningful change”. Don’t despair for the imagined future, the ‘youth of today’ have it all under control.
