The Bredäng Kids

The absence of smartphones, plateau sneakers by Fila, the same jingle of a Gameboy and the sentence: “See you tomorrow after school?”. That’s the sound of growing up in the nineties. Far apart from today’s multimedia world, adolescence in the nineties was much more 'real'. There were spin-the-bottle, uncountable hours at the football court and Kurt Cobain’s grunge music straining your parents' nerves. In this editorial, Swedish photographer Kari Jaroszysnka brought her love for the nineties-nostalgia in a beautiful series with Jean Jacques and Benjamin at MP Stockholm, and Philip at Le Management.

Together they channel Kari’s childhood memories. She portrays the boys in her personal pre-Generation Z interpretation in Bredäng - a small suburb of Stockholm, that reminds her of the typical local hood with its stereotype blocks and places to hang out after school. Back in the days, this was where life happened. Loitering around, and meeting strangers that become friends during a game you won together. Laughing until the sun sinks, having that light-hearted feeling, wrapping you very close - but only until you remember tomorrows' homework is still waiting to be done.

In their homage to the years before the turn of the millennium, the boys embrace the feeling of the vibrant decade even within fashion. Dressed by stylist Sandra Ekenstam, the trio wears brands known as the embodiment of the nineties. From sporty Puma and Fila over relaxed Converse and Diesel. With tracksuit jackets, reflecting silver highlights, hats the wrong way around and bum bags crossover, you can feel that nineties fever. The boys celebrate memories shaped Kari's childhood, where the hours were without an iPad or Spotify. Enjoying the flashbacks - feeling like they were born ten years too late.
