Winter waves slosh and foam onto the sands of the docklands, as the sails of moored vessels grapple with the northerly winds.
City dwellers reside in riverside inns, echoes of laughter and lips wet with brandy - it is their last chance before the reclusive tide of another lockdown draws in.
Beneath the rotten timber locks that lead to the icy waters of the Thames, a budding kinship thrives between two boys: Amadou Fall (Select) and Razak Salifou (Supa Model Management). Their hardened fists clasp around smooth pebbles, threading them around their fingertips in a restless, cycling motion. The land-born renegades have their eyes set beyond the crest of the volatile waterways, as the cries of gulls carry the spirit of the seafarers afar to foreign shores.
Photographer Jade Danielle Smith reinstalls an 18th-century industrial theme, utilising a monochromic framework of cranes and corroded iron casts. Armed with rain parkas and straw boater hats, stylist Becky Seager completes the seafarer landscape by applying a palette of organic hues: sandy beiges and earthy tones. Amidst the solitary waves there is a burden, laced in lead, in which the seafarer must bear: a longing that cannot be purged, but can be shared.
