A faint fragrance of drying paint saturates balmy air as sunshine seeps through glass windows, casting silhouettes on bare walls. Contour lines are painted with sunlight across cheeks and collarbones. Spring dewdrops form on faces, thirsting to dry in a palliating summer night’s breeze. Shadowed leaves crawl up lime-washed walls as seeds of newness sow themselves into the crevices of herringbone floors. There is a nostalgic freshness in each room exposing cedar wood doors and copper pipes, like the ephemeral feeling of winter softening to spring’s warmth and spring melting to summer’s heat.
There is beauty in the in-between.
Simmering anticipation lives there. It is when a faded sketch on a blank canvas is just about to become a masterpiece. Photographer Sara Bille captures these moments in between concentrated sunbursts and diluted shadows. People often look different in a home - they are open and off-guard. The boys linger in waiting with dropped shoulders and open shirts, just before who they are behind closed doors meets who they are to the world. Captured is the second when posture is not quite a pose.
Emine Sander’s styling is inter-seasonal. Puffer jackets meet linen shorts, wool socks reach toward polyester boxing shorts, and heavy knits hang loosely over bare skin. The boys are painted in a sunrise of hues as if the surrounding art floods out from their frames. Like the boys, the fashion pieces are together, but distinctly separate. Each boy’s day will be unique from the next, but for this brief moment, they exist in the same space as the same perfumed air fills their lungs. Here, they can collect and just be. Glints of light flash from their eyes that have yet to see how the day will pour into their empty cups.
