You left a mark on my neck when you met me. Not the type of love stain that settles beneath the surface of my skin like a crimson constellation, but a cable indentation from the chain you draped around my nape with a pendant that rests upon my chest. It glides against my ribs with each breath I take, it pounds beside my heart with every moment we share. When I took it off that night and clutched it in my palm, its silhouette was set into my skin like a scar; so delicate, so fragile. Yet as it slipped from my grasp, its indent faded, just like you did into the night.
I wore you around me, the warmth upon my bones, the blood within my veins. I enveloped myself in fabric that fits my body as you did, so seamless and sentimental, the fashion of my love – a sentiment mirrored in the embrace of Jaydon and Lucas. When clustering crowds immerse me like clouds on darkened days, I still search for your face and await your embrace in spite of the looks and bystander disgrace. You were my solace, your arms my shelter, draped around my nape like a chain with a pendant that rests upon my chest.
The nights are colder now than they were with you. As I walk along these empty roads immersed in my poetry, your voice echoes in the hollows of my mind and you appear in the fountain of my words. As I retrace each step, searching for an answer to questions I hope to never hear, I wish I could lose you. But tonight, I surrender to the times I like to remember, cloaked in a coat and wrapped in a scarf, draped around my nape like a chain with a pendant that rests upon my chest.
