A cloak of fog and mist rides through the sky on waves of wind. Scents of salt and damp wood whisk through the air as deep, rhythmic crashes of pacific waves hum lowly in the distance. The ocean’s tide rips along the shore, both the sun and surfers taking a day of slumber as the California skies darken in deep blankets of thick grey clouds. A roar of thunder breaks through the methodical sound of the water as the ocean begins rippling with drops of fresh rain. In the middle of the electric wind is Finn Gesner whose golden locks spin to straw-tones as the rain beats onto the fluted deck, sputtering a rhythm he can play to.
Alongside the tempest is a beaming place of solace, filled with the bond of familial care and warmth. Glass windows stained in hues of green and orange accompany dark wood, arching towards the sky above in holy promises of strength and security. Finn’s family home stands like a lighthouse in the midst of a storm, guiding people back to a sturdy landing place. Photographer Jess Wasson documents it all through Finn’s lens, the flash of the camera mimicking the quick lightning striking the sky. She captures his passionate and creative spirit as a musician in her photos. Finn released his project “0” in June of last year showcasing high contrast compositions presented visually in neon shades of red, blue, and green, a palette also present in styling by Camila Ross. His appearance is complementary to the deep tones of his home - and just as powerful.
Designed by his grandfather, the self-taught and radically gifted architect, Harry Gesner, Finn’s family home sits directly on the coast of Malibu. The heritage of the house is deep rooted, where Finn spent his adolescence moulding into the exuberant and passionate person he is today. As he lounges throughout the rooms, Finn reminisces on the plethora of memories he has collected throughout life. Each piece of wood, each window pane that built this home is laced in memories of himself with both his father and grandfather, filled with love and tenderness, along with many days soaking up rays and surfing in the ocean. Each room in the house is like a portal to another world, filled with various energies that all hold the remembrance of generations that have passed, and the future ones to come.
Our memories and experiences envelop us each day, similar to the rain as it washes our skin, the sun kissing our cheeks, red and freckled. Like a sweet embrace from a loved one, these memories linger in the doorway once they have left, filled with a bond built through years of brewing storms and blooming buds. As the seasons shift, we do as well. Years after years of growth and change, like the swell of a wave, building and building until it barrels and rolls back to a thick blanket of seafoam and salty mist. Finn is always there though, ready to catch the next wave in both the water and in his day-to-day. Through it all, he always remembers to look towards both the shore and the horizon, knowing where he has come from, where he is yet to go, and always finding home as a solid place to land.
